What is Diabetes?
In general terms Diabetes is a medical condition in which excessive amounts of glucose in the bloodstream causes serious health problems. The abnormally high glucose levels are caused by the failure of the body to produce enough insulin or when a problem arises with how the body uses the insulin.
When the human body breaks down food for energy it creates a substance known as glucose. This glucose is not just essential for energy but also for many other important bodily functions such as creating and maintaining cell health and muscle repair.
Because insulin regulates the release of glucose it plays a vital part in making sure that the human body is operating properly. The problems occur when there are issues with the creation and/or use of the insulin to control the glucose levels.
There are two main types of Diabetes, these are referred to as Type 1 and Type 2.
Type 1 Diabetes
This is the result of insufficient amounts of insulin being created by the body. This is the less common type of Diabetes. It is more common in young people and is commonly known as Early or Juvenile Diabetes. This particular form of Diabetes generally occurs as a result of a malfunction in the Pancreas where the insulin is created.
Type 2 Diabetes
This is far more common, this form of Diabetes is often called Adult Diabetes. It is generally caused by obesity and other lifestyle issues.
Common Symptoms of Diabetes

- Continual fatigue
- Blurred vision
- Tingling sensation in the extremities e.g. finger tips
